1921: “Ing. Cappuccini & C.” is founded |
Milan Bovisa plant |
The present group dates back to the early 20’s. Ing. Ambrogio Cappuccini, Rag. Angelo Ferrario and Ing. Piero Nulli started a business for the manufacture of refrigerators in Milan Bovisa, in an area they owned, measuring about 15,000 sqm.
During the first twenty years the firm Cappuccini broadens its manufacturing and selling business:
- it opens a chemical plant for the production of sulphur dioxide (used as refrigerator gas,
- it addresses the oenological sector with the primary sulphur dioxide derivatives,
- it starts manufacturing also equipment and machinery for winemaking and cave management.

1941: the Second World War |

In 1941 the company name changes into “F.lli Nulli – successori
di Cappuccini”, following the entry of almost all Nulli brothers
and the exit of Ing. Cappuccini.
During the Second World War the machine shop is transferred and in
1943 even the offices and the warehouses are moved to Treviglio, in
the province of Bergamo, due to the bombardments taking place in Milan
where the sulphur dioxide production plant remains. |

1951: the company becomes “F.lli Nulli spa” |

The years after the war are characterised by an increasing focus on chemistry.
In 1951 the company becomes “F.lli Nulli spa”.
In 1958 a significant technological breakthrough allows the company to improve its competitiveness for two main reasons:
1) The installation of a fluid-bed furnace (at that time a pioneer technology) to burn pyrite with considerable savings compared to sulphur cost.
2) The installation of a sulphuric acid production plant to increase the combustion overall production capacity by cutting production costs.
During the ‘60s F.lli Nulli purchases new industrial areas in order to ensure the future development of the various activities: in particular, in 1963 warehouses for goods storage and some production units are gradually built at San Martino di Trecate.

1969: the company moves to San Martino di Trecate with a new name, “ESSEODUE” |
Overview of San Martino industrial area in 1968 |
In 1968 a big opportunity arose for the plant of San Martino di Trecate: the Company Montecatini (producing sulphur dioxide at Linate in these years) stops the SO2 production and entrusts F.lli Nulli with the task to supply all Montecatini factories. A five-year contract is signed with the new Company called “Esseodue”.
The contract allows the Company to transfer the production to San Martino and to build a plant and a production line of such a size to compete with the best European producers. The production line starts operating only twelve months after the contract is entered into.
In 1969 the Company moves finally to Trecate.
One year later also Ing. Piero Nulli joins the company. In the beginning he deals only with the development of the Industrial Products new division; then, he runs the entire company.

1988: Esseodue becomes “ESSECO” |
Esseco starts processing sulphur directly and undertakes an investment policy even out of San Martino headquarters relating to the warehouses at Borgolavezzaro and at Macchiareddu (Sardinia) and involving the partial or full acquisition of companies in Italy (Agrindustria and Svecodue) and abroad (Martin Vialatte and Station Oenotechnique de Champagne), thus enhancing its commitment in the oenological business.

2001: The power production starts with CIP6
tariffs |
2003: Launch of Enartis |
2003 is a very important year for Esseco group with the launch of Enartis, the new trademark distinguishing the group oenological business.
2003: EGC - Esseco General Chemical LLC
is incorporated |
The company EGC Esseco General Chemical LLC is incorporated, as a result of the joint-venture with General Chemical Corporation, one of the leading North American producers of sulphur derivatives.
The new company is set up to sell in particular Sodium Metabisulphite, Sodium Sulphite and Sodium Thiosulphate in the U.S. and in NAFTA countries.
Esseco, founded in 1920 as sulphur dioxide producer, has successfully become one of the most important world groups in the production and sale of sulphur-based chemicals.
2003: the new metabisulphite plant starts operating |
While the agreements with the U.S. are defined, a new plant starts operating at San Martino industrial site (its construction started in 2002) allowing to increase the sodium metabisulphite production capacity by over 20,000 tons per year.
Thus, the company strengthens considerably its position on the world market and the EGC joint-venture is immediately successful as leading distributor of sulphur-based salts for the North American continent.

2004: Essemar is incorporated |
Essemar is incorporated: a joint-venture with Marchi Industriali for the production of Sulphuric Acid and Oleum destined to the internal market of Northern Italy.
The plant with an output of 150,000 tons per year is one of the major investments ever made by Esseco.
2004: EGC changes its name |
The full control of EGC is acquired and ECG becomes Esseco USA.
2004: A central coordination of all oenological
activities is set up: Ever, Sofralab, Sepsa, Enartis |
2004: Esseco Group |
Esseco Group, the holding company, is founded: a thorough re-organisation of the companies involved in the Nulli family’s entrepreneurial project is performed.
The general restructuring objectives are business optimisation in terms of internal efficiency improvement, by centralising the main management functions, and increased market transparency of the different activities and companies of the group, through a full coordination at all levels.
